Running into Friendship and Sunshine
Christmas Day started with the slow rhythm of routine—packing, organizing, and sorting everything before hitting the road. I’m gradually getting into the flow of mornings like this, but today was special. I wanted to be punctual because I had arranged to meet my long-time Strava running friend, Jane.
As I stepped out of the hotel, there she was, headtorch on and ready to run. I have to say, the Strava Community has been an incredible source of support for me this past year. When I joined Strava just one year ago, I had no idea about social media or how meaningful online communities could be. But my Strava friends have often lifted me up, especially on tough days. Today was the big day—I finally met one of them in person! Jane was one of the first people to reach out to me, encouraging me with her comments and positivity. And now, here we were, running together on Christmas morning.
The run started in the dark, with mist hanging in the warm morning air—a surprisingly mild Christmas Day. We chatted and shared the moment as we ran side by side. Around 8 a.m., as the first light of the day broke, it was time to say goodbye. Jane headed left, and I continued straight, but I felt incredibly grateful for the time we shared.
Shortly after, I met another fascinating person—a bird watcher—before settling into a quieter stretch of running. While I love engaging with people curious about my journey, moments of solitude on the road are just as valuable. Today was filled with meaningful encounters and heartfelt reactions—thank you to everyone who stopped to talk or simply shared a smile.
About halfway through, I started to feel a bit sluggish. Maybe I hadn’t fueled properly, but the sunshine more than made up for it. The day warmed up beautifully, with golden light stretching across the landscape. At one point, I considered heading into Bridgwater for a break but decided instead to stop on a bench along the route. Taking a moment to relax and soak in the Christmas Day stillness felt like the perfect gift to myself.
The final stretch took me along the canal and then onto the road leading to the hotel in Taunton. As I finished my run, I reflected on how much this day meant to me. From meeting Jane to the kindness of strangers, this journey continues to remind me why I’m doing this.
Merry Christmas, everyone! Thank you for your love, support, and encouragement—it means the world to me.
