A Journey of Conversation and Christmas Kindness

Today’s run, spanning 36.6 miles, took me through an extraordinary journey both on foot and in spirit. Starting early, I followed the scenic Kennet and Avon Canal, covering the first 20 miles along its tranquil towpath. The morning air was warm, and the canal reflected a perfect stillness, broken only by the conversations and connections that turned this stretch into a tapestry of stories.

I met dog walkers, chatted with people who live on the boats and shared glimpses of their lives on water, exchanged smiles with runners passing by, and observed fishers waiting patiently along the canal banks. Every interaction, regardless of age or background, reminded me of the warmth and love people bring, especially during this festive season. I also handed out many cards with my information so people could connect with me if they liked. The hugs I received today were extra special – Christmas hugs always feel magical.

After passing through Bradford on Avon, my route shifted toward Radstock, taking me through Wellow. The steep inclines demanded more effort, but the reward was in the views and, even more so, in the people I encountered. Just as I arrived at the village shop, I discovered it had closed moments earlier. But what happened next truly encapsulated the kindness of the holiday season.

The family living next door invited me in, offering not just their time but also food and warmth. I was handed a delicious sandwich filled with fresh cheese and cucumber, a snack bar, chips, and water. The generosity of these three generations left me speechless. To the kind family in Wellow – thank you! Your kindness will carry me through many more miles.

Continuing toward Midsomer Norton, I made a detour to find another store before heading through Chilcompton. As daylight began to fade, I strapped on my headtorch and put on my orange vest for the final six miles toward Wells. The road was a mix of uphill climbs and a long, exhilarating 2.5-mile downhill stretch that brought me straight to the heart of Wells.

As I entered the Market Place, the cathedral bells began ringing – a beautiful, serendipitous Christmas symphony to mark my arrival. The festive lights and decorations in downtown Wells brought an extra sparkle to the end of an already magical day. I checked into a cozy hotel where the staff greeted me with genuine warmth and care, making me feel like part of their family.

The entire day was a reflection of what my run is truly about: a journey of conversation and change. From the canal towpath to the steep hills, from generous strangers to joyful Christmas bells, every moment today reminded me why I’m doing this.

To everyone I met today – thank you for the smiles, the words, the food, and the love. It’s people like you who keep my legs moving and my heart full. Merry Christmas to all, and here’s to more miles and more connections tomorrow!
