Rest, Gingerbread, and a Haircut — Transitioning in Eugene

Daily miles: 0 | Total miles: 5729.37

After 104 days of running across the United States, from Jacksonville, Florida to the Pacific Ocean in Florence, Oregon — today was my first real rest day. And wow, did I feel it.

I slept in until 8am, which honestly felt like a luxury. I slept deeply, but I could tell that my body was still carrying a mountain of fatigue. It’s funny how as soon as you stop moving, your body takes the opportunity to tell you just how tired it really is.

The hotel had hot coffee ready, and that first sip set the tone for a soft, slow morning. I packed up slowly, no rush, no miles to chase. Just breathing. Just being.

Don and I took a relaxed car ride from Florence back to Eugene. On the way, we stopped one last time at the Gingerbread House. I couldn’t resist — another piece of their heavenly gingerbread and a coffee. One of those small joys that seems to sum up so much of what this journey has been: simplicity, kindness, nourishment, and a smile.

Once in Eugene, Don dropped me off at a friend’s house — my next temporary home base as I prepare for the next leg of this world run.

The rest of the day was all about soft landings:

I got a haircut (yes, much needed!)

Cooked a comforting dinner

Did some research for the road ahead

And gave myself permission to just… be lazy.

After 13 states and 3,476.14 miles over 104 days, I’m proud of every step. For those who like details:

Florida: 8 days

Georgia: 1 day

Alabama: 10 days

Mississippi: 6 days

Arkansas: 15 days

Missouri: 2 days

Kansas: 17 days

Nebraska: ½ day

Colorado: 7 days

Wyoming: 12 days

Utah: 2 days

Idaho: 10 days

Oregon: 14 days

Every mile has added a layer to my experience, my understanding, and my commitment.

I don’t know exactly what tomorrow brings — only that today, I slowed down, recharged, and gave myself a bit of care.

Thanks for walking (and running) with me. See you again very soon.
