Crossing the Mighty Mississippi and Finding Gratitude

Today was special — a day I'd been looking forward to for a long time. I woke up really early, buzzing with excitement to finally cross the Mississippi River. The sun hadn’t risen yet when I stepped out of the casino driveway, but soon enough, a stunning red sunrise painted the sky.

With my headlamp turned backward and my bright orange vest on, I made sure the trucks and cars behind me could see me. Then I stood at the intersection, just steps away from the bridge — that long-awaited crossing.

Why does this river mean so much to me? Well, I've always loved rivers, and the Mississippi has this mystic, historical charm that's always drawn me in. Crossing it felt special — a quiet yet powerful moment. As I ran over the bridge at sunrise, I could feel that sense of connection. The traffic was steady, but manageable, and I stayed focused, savoring the experience. It gave me a deep sense of peace — fulfilling a dream I'd carried for a long time.

Reality hit hard, though, as I entered the historic town of West Helena. The town felt worn down, abandoned buildings lining the streets — a stark reminder of how time changes places. It’s one thing to know about such struggles, but seeing it firsthand really struck me. It made me reflect on how fortunate I am to have the opportunities I do.

Despite the town’s tough exterior, the people I met were warm and kind. Marquis, a young man waiting for a job interview, and Tyrone, happily waving as he cleaned a car — these moments lifted my spirits. People like them remind me why this journey means so much.

From there, I had great running conditions with my own lane along the highway. Just before reaching Marianna, I stopped for groceries and met Rodley, another inspiring young man.

Now, I’ve got food, a bed, and — well, WiFi only if I sit on my room’s doorstep. Not bad! The buggy had to be disassembled just to fit through the narrow entrance, turning my evening into a mini climbing game — but that’s all part of the adventure.

Days like today remind me that this run is more than just miles — it’s a dream, a privilege, and an incredible journey filled with amazing people. Thanks for sharing it with me.

Be well, my friends. Until tomorrow.
