Embracing the Journey: Kindness, Headwinds, and Lessons on the Road
I woke up in my tent, well-rested and ready for the day ahead. It was a cold morning, but I felt good knowing that today’s run would be relatively short. After packing up all my things, I got back on Highway 98, wearing my jacket to keep warm as I eased into a steady rhythm.
Just a few miles in, I came across a gas station with free WiFi—perfect timing! I used the opportunity to catch up on posting my social media updates, something I hadn’t been able to do the night before. While I was there, an older man named Larry struck up a conversation with me, curious about my journey. It’s always nice to connect with people along the way, even if just for a short chat.
After another 10 miles, I stopped at McDonald’s to recharge all my devices and get some work done using their WiFi. While I was sitting there, a woman noticed my buggy and asked about my project. She was so delighted by what I was doing that she shared my story with her husband. Before Betsy and Rick left, they gave me an apple, a mandarin, and even some money. What?! That was unexpected but very kind. Then, Travis, a young man who had overheard our conversation, also handed me some money. What a day!
As I kept running, I reflected on the support I’ve been receiving. Not long ago, I felt hesitant about accepting help. I was afraid that if people supported me and, for some reason, I couldn’t complete the run, I would disappoint them. But over time, I’ve come to realize that when someone offers support, it’s because they truly want to. They understand that nothing is guaranteed, but they believe in me and my journey. And I will absolutely do my best to honor that belief.
The last 18 miles felt good overall. A strong headwind picked up at times, but I’ve learned to be patient with it—just slowing down a bit and accepting it rather than getting frustrated.
When I arrived at the RV Camp Resort, I just hoped I’d be able to pitch my tent. Luckily, Bill, the camp host, made it all easy. I set up my tent, took a nice shower, and prepared some couscous for dinner. After catching up on a few social media tasks, I knew I’d sleep like a baby tonight.
On my way back from the shower, I met Shane, and we had a short but nice conversation to end the day.
See you tomorrow—take care!
