A Run Through Perspectives

I got up late, knowing I had a 31-mile run ahead but feeling unhurried. By 8 a.m., I was packed and ready, stepping out onto a cycle path that traced the edge of Lago Calafquen. The morning was cool, overcast, and quiet, with the lake mirroring the grey sky while fog lingered on the hills across the water. On one side, the vast lake with its scattered islands and on the other, a towering mountain cliff—it was humbling, a reminder of how small I am in the grand scheme of things, yet how free I feel in these moments.

The path soon turned steep, much like the coastal climbs I’ve faced before, but this time, it was beside the lake. Even the inclines felt meaningful, each step reinforcing my deep appreciation for nature’s power and beauty. I paused for quick photos and snacks, reminding myself to absorb these moments fully—to just be here, in awe.

After about half the distance, my route shifted away from the lake, leading me through tree-lined roads and valleys where I crossed yet more rivers. Each descent brought a stunning rio, each climb another new perspective. About ten miles from my destination, I stopped for a cappuccino and noticed a stark contrast—tourism had made some areas wealthier, while others remained simple. Another thought to carry with me as I ran the last stretch.

I arrived at a lovely home where Elisa, Israel, their daughter, grandson, three Labradors, and Señorita the cat welcomed me warmly. The evening was peaceful—I prepped a fresh salad, and later, we shared tea, bread, and stories about our lives. Before the night ended, Israel took me to his greenhouse, where we picked apples from the tree for me to take on my journey tomorrow.

Another day of running, reflecting, and connecting. Only a few more in Chile—I will savor them all.
