The Last Stretch to Border Village
Daily miles: 31.36 | Total miles: 8,452.71
I woke at 6:30 am to a wet, cold tent, but ready to tackle the final stretch to Border Village Roadhouse. After a quick, cold coffee in the tent and carefully packing everything, I stepped back onto the highway for the last few miles.
I wore my shirt, a jacket, and a down jacket — clearly too much for running — but I couldn’t shed a layer; the cold kept me bundled up. The morning was calm and almost windless, which made it a peaceful start. I set my focus on one thing: just running and making it to the Roadhouse.
But then, to my left, the view opened onto the ocean. The sight was so spectacular that even feeling sick, I had to slow down, take a deep breath, and simply take it all in. The waves crashed in infinite loops, the dark blue of the ocean stretching endlessly, interspersed with lighter blue along the coast. It was breathtaking.
The sun came out, warming the morning, but I still kept my jacket on — better to sweat and be warm than risk the chill of a breeze. Along the way, Nicole stopped by in her car, and we chatted for a while; she was traveling with her four children.
Arriving at Border Village, I couldn’t resist the traditional photo with the kangaroo! I met a couple of travelers and realized I was losing my voice — the cold and effort taking their toll. After that, it was time for a shower, washing my hair, grabbing a meal, catching up on socials, and organizing gear. The work never stops.
A short day, but full of quiet wonder and reflection. Thanks for checking in.
