Expanding Horizons
This morning, I was up and ready to run just after 7 AM. The sun was rising, the air was still calm, and Highway 27 stretched endlessly before me, leading all the way to my next destination: Goodland.
It was one of those mornings that take your breath away — peaceful Kansas in all its glory. Rolling grass-covered hills painted in soft, changing colors, a boundless blue sky, herds of cows and horses grazing quietly, and birds flapping their wings and chirping joyfully. I was in awe, feeling at peace with the journey, deeply aware of being just a tiny part of this vast, beautiful universe. Running through the high plains of Kansas felt like a true privilege — a unique atmosphere where thoughts and dreams could expand freely.
Today offered many such moments, inviting a deeper clarity and inner peace that I treasure. I love when the road gives me that.
About 10 miles in, the wind began to pick up, blowing mostly from the west. It wasn’t ideal, but not too punishing either. As I paused briefly, a car pulled over with the window down. A young man (let’s call him Friend G.) offered generous monetary support, along with a few kind, encouraging words. His kindness stayed with me for the rest of the day, giving my steps even more meaning.
Later, about eight miles before reaching Goodland, another car stopped. This time, a warm-hearted woman named Ramona — 93 years old! — handed me homemade brownies and chips. She parked her car, introduced herself, and we stood chatting for a while. Her spirit and warmth touched me deeply. We exchanged information, and I carried her goodies — and her kindness — all the way into town.
The land I ran through today was grounding, expansive, and humbling. But even more powerful were the people who crossed my path. Their generosity and spirit made the day unforgettable.
Once I reached Goodland, I did a quick grocery run and checked into my hotel. At the front desk, Eduard and Ricardo greeted me with big smiles and heartfelt enthusiasm about my journey. Their genuine support was the perfect ending to a special day.
Now, I’m wrapping up the evening — writing, eating, preparing for tomorrow. Kansas' flatness, its endless roads and sky, keep reminding me how small I am — and how beautiful that smallness can be. Out here, nature puts everything into perspective.
Thank you for following along on this wild, wonderful journey. See you tomorrow!
